Aruba climate overview
This small island lies off the coast of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea. It has a rich colonial history and is today an autonomous dependency of the Netherlands, still maintaining a distinctly Dutch flavour in its architecture and atmosphere. The economy relies on tourism, financial services and oil refining.
Aruba is famed for its beaches. The golden sands and palm trees also attract hordes of tourists around the most famous Eagle and Palm beaches, which are invariably crowded.
Less crowded beaches can be found along the southern coast of the island, while the east coast is rocky, wild, and more or less deserted. Quite a few beaches are reef-protected attracting a large variety of marine life making ideal conditions for swimming and snorkelling in the calm, warm waters.
The island is arid and supports little more than scrub vegetation with cacti and succulents. A bizarre looking low volcanic hill can be seen from most parts of the island, making for a strange and eerie setting. An occasional pocket of greenery can be found, at Diamari for example, were there is a lush coconut plantation.
Aruba has a tropical climate with a long dry season running from January to September. This is also the sunniest time of the year with very little cloud. Rainfall peaks in November and December but even this amounts to no more than a few showers. Temperatures remain warm all year round and in summer heat and humidity is usually very high.
