March: Sri Lanka

The tear-drop shaped island of Sri Lanka continues to be a crowd-pleaser. It's distinctly diverse with something for everyone, from beach lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, to outdoorsy types, history-seekers and those after a taste of somewhere different (on that note, the food is pretty special too!).

Long, curved beaches with the marine-rich, not to mention warm, waters of the Indian Ocean are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, plus there's always the chance to go whale watching and see dolphins at play. Meanwhile, the multitude of national parks serves up safaris, hiking trails and space to go bird watching.

Sri Lanka has a strong cultural identity and a fascinating, if complex, history that deserves some delving. Discover scared Sigiriya Rock, visit important shrines such as the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, learn about the tea trade and life on a plantation, find out about the nation's history in the National Museum of Colombo, and walk the ramparts of colonial Galle Fort.

Add to this the friendly locals and the excellent weather, and it's easy to see why Sri Lanka has become so popular and loved by all who visit. Although conditions are good throughout the year, March is one of the best months for its perfect blend of high temperatures, warm water and hours of sunshine.

April: Jordan

The ongoing crisis in Syria and the wider Middle East has undoubtedly affected tourism levels to Jordan. However, a holiday to the magical lands of this beguiling country, which happens to have some truly wonderful weather to boot, is well within reach if you're looking for an adventure of a different kind.

There are a number of ways you can do Jordan: if it's sun, sea and sand you're after, aim for the Red Sea resort town of Aqaba. You'll find hotels with pools, as well as beach clubs with well-equipped stretches of sand - snorkelling is an absolute must here.

Water sports and boat trips can be arranged by day, while evenings let you sample the local restaurants. For a night out in style, head to The Royal Yacht Club of Jordan to dine overlooking the marina.

Another way to do Jordan is to surge into its heritage: lose yourself in its desert heartlands, bump around the red valleys of Wadi Rum, camp under the stars in a traditional Bedouin tent, trek to the UNESCO-recognised rock-city of Petra and hike in the eco-surroundings of Dana Biosphere Reserve.

Throw in the Roman ruins of the capital, Amman and impressive Jerash, not to mention the mighty Crusader fortress of Kerak Castle, and you soon see why Jordan is far more than simply beautiful beaches.

Weatherwise, Jordan heats up a little too much for some in summer, which is why spring (and autumn for that matter) is a delightful time to visit. Days are sunny and warm without any heat and humidity, and there's very little rainfall, making April one of the best months of the year to visit.

May: China

China, the most populous country on earth, is home to everything from mega metropolises to vast deserts, open steppe lands and an enormous coastline. You'll find huge rivers, soaring mountain ranges as well as manmade heights, and a fierce history full of intrigue and brutality. China's tale is an absorbing one, and as one of the world's emerging superpowers, now is the time to get to know this vast and varied nation.

Given its size, it should be no surprise that the climate depends very much on where you are, be it in the arid northwest or the cloudy rainforests of the south.

The capital city Beijing, which lies In the far northeast of the country, is where you can experience a well-balanced mix of old and new: walk in the footsteps of emperors at The Forbidden City, marvel at the sold jade boat and landscaped gardens of the Summer Palace, circumnavigate the Temple of Heaven and sip tea among historic hutongs.

Tiananmen Square is the place to pause in consideration of more recent history before shopping till you drop in the malls or among the street markets. Then there's the food - Chinese like you've never had before! Don't miss out on a round of moreish Peking duck while you're there.

Beijing sees some of its finest weather in May. Days are long with lots of sunshine, little rain, and temperatures are high without being too hot. May also beats the impending increase in heat and humidity, which sets in over summer.

If you're considering a trip to China in May, other destinations such as Shanghai and the beginning of the Silk Road, old Xi'an, also enjoy good weather in May, and can easily be added on to any trip to Beijing.

June: Iceland

Staying a little closer to home this time, Iceland is our pick for June thanks to its lengthy days and relatively mild weather, which makes visiting the natural wonders of this land of ice and fire an absolute joy.

In fact, Nordic Iceland endures as much as 21 hours of daylight per day in June, with around five hours of sunshine. Make the most of these long days by seeing as much as possible, from the quirky, colourful capital of Reykjavik with its cool cafés and museums detailing the island's Viking past to dramatic waterfalls and glaciers.

There's a slew of impressive waterfalls across Iceland, the long drops of Gullfoss and Skógafoss two of the most well-known.

Then there are the 269 named glaciers that quite literally cover swathes of Iceland. Head for the Vatnajokull glacier (the largest in Europe), while Myrdalsjakull glacier is where you'll also find one of Iceland's largest active volcanoes.

For adventures in water, the hot springs of the Blue Lagoon come top of the list for many, however, it's also somewhat overrun. Instead, head for smaller, quieter spots such as Laugarvatn Fontana or Myvatn Nature Baths, the so-called 'Blue Lagoon of the North'.

You can also take a dip between the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America at Silfra for a rather momentous swim. Diving and snorkelling tours with a guide and dry suit are easily arranged.

And you'll need that dry suit, as the water temperature in Iceland is bracing, even in June - think 4°C cooler than the English Channel off the coast of Brighton at the same time.

However, no one goes to Iceland for high temperatures. Go prepared with suitable layers and walking boots, and you're guaranteed a fantastic experience getting to know this natural playground in the North Atlantic.

July: Canada

Canada, the world's second-largest country by size, is a monster of a destination, where space, wilderness and dramatic scenery are found by the bucketload, with ample action-packed activities as well as historic cities and trendy neighbourhoods.

In the east of the country, the likes of Montreal, Tornoto and Quebec City are bright and sunny in summer, with July seeing highs around the 27°C mark.

If you plump for the traditionally French-speaking city of Montreal, you'll delight in festivals, museums, architecture and so much more. Montreal was also designated North America's first UNESCO City of Design, best experienced in the International Quarter.

Meanwhile, Vancouver in the far southwest of Canada has a completely different identity, although not dissimilar climate. Things are a little cooler and fresher than in Montreal in July, however.

Living on the edge of the ocean and ringed by mountains, Vancouver's a great base from which you can get stuck into a world of activities. It's also an increasingly chic spot for city breakers and, thanks to the new route with Wowair* via Iceland, more affordable to get to than ever before.

Of course, there's all the land in between as well, which is what makes it such a great place for those who want to hire a car or campervan and hit the roads, stopping at the likes of Banff National Park, letting you discover your very own Canada at your very own pace.

Its sheer size, spanning land from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with huge heights and low-lying urban centres, means the weather in Canada is, to say the least, varied. The summer months, however, are the very best for making the most of Canada's soaring outdoors (although some winter sports' enthusiasts may disagree!).

August: Switzerland

For a holiday closer to home with a European-feel, the mountainous peaks and lake-side cities of Switzerland take some beating, especially in August. There's surprising variety on offer in this small, landlocked nation at the heart of continental Europe, with French, Italian and German influences at every turn.

In the capital city of Bern you'll find a medieval old town - UNESCO-stamped, of course - with terracotta-topped townhouses, fountains and flowerbeds decorating the warren of streets. The Aare River, which hems the old centre in a true horseshoe bend fashion, is also the place for summer swimming and boating.

On then to the oh-so Italian city of Lugano deep in southern Switzerland. Bursting with Italian flair, you can't escape the distinctive architecture and food that set Lugano apart for its more Germanic Swiss peers.

While the city boasts pretty parks and lake-front promenades, it's the surrounding hillsides that beg to be hiked. Head up Mount Salvatore - on two legs or by the handy cable car - to enjoy a drink with an impressive view of Lake Lugano below.

Finally, for a dose of Swiss culture, Geneva is full of museums and galleries to entertain all ages. Take a tour of the United Nations Office, lose yourself in the Museum of Art History or hire a boat and cruise past the water fountain and out on to Lake Geneva.

Given its elevated position, Switerland doesn't get quite as hot as some of its neighbours, even in summer. This means it's a breeze for those who don't like it too hot but do want to bask in some beautiful sunshine and fresh mountain air, and August is one of the best months of the year to get stuck in.

September: Morocco

Ah, Morocco. This enchanting nation in the west of North Africa is a safe and scenic place to holiday, offering wonderful weather and a plethora of things to see, do, taste and try.

The old Imperial City of Agadir on Morocco's Atlantic coast is the place for a quintessential beach break. The great arc of golden sands is lined with a wide range of accommodation, be it a boutiquey riad or souped-up, all-inclusive resort complete with swimming pools and water sports.

If you can tear yourself away from your lounger, the city's winding streets promise lots of twists, turns and photo ops - look for the traditionally-designed Grand Mosque and head to the busy Souk el Had for a spot of haggling and souvenir shopping.

You might think summer is a good time to go to Morocco, and it is if you like the heat; things get seriously hot here during July and August, especially inland and towards the desert.

Even by September, coastal resorts such as Agadir remain warm, if not hot, with eight hours of sunshine and virtually no rain. The sea is as warm as it gets and evenings are mild, although you may want to bring a layer or two.

If you're looking for higher temperatures, head inland to the likes of Marrakech, where you'll find that little bit more sunshine and hotter, drier-feeling, days minus the cooling effect of the Atlantic Ocean.

October: Japan

Did you know that the archipelago of Japan includes more than 6,800 islands? Yet, there are only four main islands that attract the most attention including, Honshu, the largest and home to the capital Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

This is a big year for Japan with the impending Rugby World Cup, which will take place from late September through to early November. This, conveniently, also crosses October, which is one of the best months to visit many of the host cities.

Heading to the Rugby World Cup? Don't miss our dedicated weather guide, with detailed info on the climate, plus fixtures and travel advice.

The swirl of neon lights, skyscrapers and shrines found in Tokyo make it one of the country's most beloved cities. It's a riot of colour and culture, with an enormous platter of great places eat and shop thrown in for good measure. Ride the metro for a cheap and fun way to see the sprawl, and make for the giant red lantern at the entrance to the city's oldest temple, Senso-Ji.

Osaka is another headline city in Japan, which will also host matches during the Rugby World Cup. As if by magic, British Airways is set to launch its brand new route to this historic port city from spring 2019.

When it comes to the weather in Japan in October, things are cooling down and drying up from summer. It's comfortable, if not cool; as a rule of thumb, the north of the country is cooler than the south, plus there's no heat and humidity by October. Expect around five to six hours of sunshine, with the chance of rainfall lessening as the month goes on.

November: Australia

As is always the way with winter sunshine, you'll have to travel further afield - and in this case, we're talking much further afield. Australia basks in the beginning of its summer by November, with temperatures starting to climb and hours of sunshine on tap.

The southwest city of Perth is our top Aussie pick for its dry, sunny days, not to mention its accessibility - fly direct from London with Qantas in around 18 hours (only!).

Coastal Perth is well situated to offer a mix of urban and rural experiences: scale the Bell Tower for the skyline, wander among plant species at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, take a trip to Penguin Island, and hit the trails of the famous Bibbulman Track.

Perth is also an ideal place from which you can hire a car and get out there visiting the nearby parks and reserves of Western Australia, such as Kalamunda National Park, Serpentine National Park and Yanchep Crystal Cave. Pack a tent and your sense of adventure for a holiday to remember.

An alternative, offering very similar, if slightly less sunny, conditions in November, is beloved Sydney with all of its world-famous attractions. This cosmopolitan capital of New South Wales is brimming with hip cafés and shops, award-winning restaurants, iconic sights and characteristically friendly antipodeans.

Australia in November is just thinking about warming up. Days are sunny - more so in the west than the east - and pleasant but not yet too hot. In fact, it's a great time to go if you want to avoid the high heat of the Australian summer, which can be too much for many.

December: Argentina

Another southern hemisphere contender at this time of year is Argentina. This giant South American nation is gearing up for its moment in the spotlight - or should that be shadows? - with the Total Solar Eclipse due to take place on 2 July 2019.

While this is set to pull in the visitors, sadly it isn't the best time of year when it comes to the weather.

Instead we're pushing for later in the year when conditions will be warming up and days are longer. Of course, it does depend on where you go: in this instance, we're talking the vibrant capital city of Buenos Aires and other destinations to the north.

Colonial Cordoba, for example, is one such place. Argentina's second city is home to historic architecture (the UNESCO-marked Jesuit Block chief among them), museums (the Evita Fine Arts Museum stands out) and pretty parks (Parque Sarmiento, complete with lake, zoo and summertime performances is the star attraction), which all promise to entertain.

Argentina also has loads for outdoor lovers, including the magnificent Iguazu Falls, the world's largest, at the tri-point of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The weather at this momentous landmark in December is hot and sunny, with just a chance of passing rain making things nice and steamy.
