If you're keen to sample golf in Tenerife you can choose between nine courses, plus one on neighbouring La Gomera, part of Tenerife province. You can also look forward to playing in pleasant and comfortable conditions from January to December.

1. Amarilla Golf - best for families

Just because you've got kids it doesn't rule out playing golf in Tenerife. Amarilla Golf at the Amarilla Golf & Country Club is the one of the best Tenerife golf courses if you're visiting with family in tow. As well as an 18-hole course and a 9-hole Pitch and Putt, there's an on-site horse riding centre and submarine safari.

2. Abama Golf & Spa Resort - best for couples

'Golf is a good walk spoiled' - not my sentiments, but the words of famous American author Mark Twain, which only goes to show that the sport is not for everybody. So whilst one half of a couple might want to pit their wits playing golf in Tenerife on a testing course with plenty of water features, the other half might prefer to pamper themselves rotten at the holistic spa. Look no further than Guía de Isora's Abama Golf & Spa Resort. The clue's in the name.

3. Golf Las Américas - best for groups

Golf Las Américas' championship 18-hole par-72 course is perfect for a visiting group, be it with friends or a work trip. The 19th hole offers a number of balconies overlooking the course, and the club is flanked by a number of hotels, including restaurants, bars and other facilities. Meanwhile, the bustling resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Américas are also located a mere 10 minutes away, making it a fantastic option for groups hoping to play golf in Tenerife.

4. Golf del Sur - best for semi-pros

The beauty of golf in Tenerife is that there's a course for everyone, including the experts. Take San Miguel de Abona's challenging Golf del Sur course, which debuted in 1987 with a professional competition, and has since hosted a number of European PGA Tour events. Admire the tricky par-five hole three, featuring a fairway flanked by an ochre canyon and roughs made up of volcanic black sand. Go ahead golf punks, make your day.

5. Real Club de Golf de Tenerife - best independent course

Enjoying a round of golf in Tenerife doesn't have to be linked to a resort. You'll find the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife in Tacoronte, in the metropolitan northeast of the island. It's the second-oldest golf course in the whole of Spain, after the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas on neighbouring Gran Canaria, dating back to 1932 when it was founded by British expats. It has a real British flavour and, located 600 metres above sea level, you can't help but be wowed by the views of Teide, Spain's tallest mountain.
