Brazil weather overview

Brazil is massive. It is larger than the United States and contains almost half the land mass of South America, although it does not include the Andes within its borders. Most of the country lies within the tropics and has a hot, steamy climate. The largest regions are the Amazon Basin, which occupies the north and centre of Brazil, and the Brazilian plateau, which includes Brasilia and lies to the south and east of the Basin.

Then there is the narrow Atlantic coastal plain and the country's southern states which, because they lie outside the tropics, have a temperate climate and can be chilly in the winter months (May to September). Rainy seasons vary from region to region. In the Amazon Basin, which is the world's largest equatorial area, the rains come mainly between December and April although there can be downpours at any time of the year.

The northeast is much drier with unpredictable rainfall from year to year. Recife, at the top of the Atlantic coastal plain, has its wettest months from April to August whereas Rio de Janeiro, at the bottom end, is moderately wet all year with heavier rainfall between November and April. The southern states experience some rain throughout the year.

What to pack for Brazil weather

Pack light cotton clothes and waterproofs geared to the region you are visiting. Take warmer wear for visits to the south, if you are travelling between May and September, and sturdy boots as well as plenty of insect repellent if visiting the Amazon.
