Burkina Faso climate overview

This landlocked west African country, once part of the Great Mossi Empire, and formerly known as Upper Volta was a French colony until 1960. Today, despite a chequered history of coup and counter coup, Burkina Faso enjoys reasonable political stability and is well known for its cultural sophistication and the hospitality of its inhabitants.

The north of Burkina Faso is covered in sand dunes or desolate semi-arid landscape at best. Vegetation is restricted to low scrub due to overgrazing and an ever-encroaching Sahara Desert. The region is sparsely populated with only the hardiest Tuareg nomads surviving.

It rarely rains in the north of the country, although occasional light showers fall between June and September. The rest of the year it remains bone-dry. Temperatures during the summer are hot, falling to warm in winter when it may even become cool at night. Winters are also plagued by dusty Harmattan winds.

Further south, Burkina Faso becomes increasingly green and fertile. Rolling hills support wooded savannahs and pockets of forest that are being rapidly cleared to make way for sugarcane plantations. The highest hills are found in the far southwest corner around Banfora where the seasonal Karfiguéla Waterfalls cascade over beautiful escarpments. The south is also where the most intensive farming is undertaken with rice, grain, and cotton all grown.

The southern half of Burkina Faso experiences a rainy season from June to October when heavy and frequent summer showers develop, often becoming thundery. The rest of the year is dry. The hot temperatures peak in late spring, before the summer rains arrive causing temperatures to fall slightly.
