About Go Ape

Go Ape* is an outdoor adventure experience providing fun, games and activities for adults and children aged four and upwards. Set in beautiful landscapes and historical backdrops, its centres comprise everything from high ropes courses, dangling obstacles and high bouncy nets to all-terrain Forest Segways and multiple treetop ziplines.

Founded in 2002 by Rebecca and Tristram Mayhew, the Go Ape story began when Becs and Tris were inspired by a family swinging through the trees while slowly travelling through France with their six-month-old daughter.

When they came home, they quit their jobs, sold everything they had and set up the first Go Ape centre at Thetford Forest. Now, more than 20 years on, Go Ape has 38 activity centres around the UK including in London, Scotland, Wales, the North and the Midlands.

In 2021, Becs and Tris transferred 90% of Go Ape shares into an Employee Ownership Trust to benefit their employees, retaining the remaining 10% of the business themselves. In 2024, they established the Go Ape Foundation*, which works with charities Go Beyond and Free to Be Kids to help those with financial difficulties access outdoor adventures.

Go Ape FAQs

What should I wear for a Go Ape day out?

Because Go Ape activities are outdoors, it's recommended you wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting mucky. Waterproof clothing is advised on rainy days.

Comfortable footwear that won't fall off easily is also essential; shoes or trainers that cover your toes and heels are best. Gloves are also recommended. You can bring your own or pre-order Go Ape's recommended gloves and collect them on arrival.

Please note that some activities require a harness to be worn around your stomach during participation. It's therefore advised to wear something that covers your stomach to prevent any rubbing from the equipment. Long hair should also be tied back.

Can I keep personal items with me during activities?

It's recommended that you empty your pockets to prevent the risk of dropping your personal items in areas that can't be safely reached by foot.

Small valuables like keys and mobile phones can be stored in Go Ape's cabin lockers but larger items like bags and coolers are best left in your car. If you wish to take your camera with you, you should safely secure it onto your harness.

Should I eat before my Go Ape adventure?

It's recommended that you fuel up before visiting Go Ape due to the physical nature of the activities. However, you don't want to be too full as it could cause some discomfort so light meals are best.

Do I need to pay for a ticket as a supervising adult?

Some activities for children require adult supervision. As a supervising adult, you only need to buy a ticket if you're participating in the activity.
