About the National Trust

The National Trust is somewhat of an institution. Its properties and gardens are destinations for many who return to much-loved spots over and over again, be it for the history, the architecture or the famously good cream teas.

The trust was founded on 12 January 1895 by a team of three remarkable individuals:

Octavia Hill - one of the greatest social reformers of the time who understood the value of fresh air and nature and, therefore, the need for green spaces
Sir Robert Hunter - a legal expert with a desire to ensure public access to, and the preservation of, countryside and historic buildings
Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley - known as 'Defender of the Lakes' for his efforts to curtail the development of natural landscapes

Today, over 125 years later, it has grown a charity of huge national importance with over five million members who, along with countless volunteers, ensure the future of over 500 historic properties, gardens and reserves, 780 miles of coastline and 250,000 hectares of farmland.

It's also a portal for anyone looking to discover new places throughout the land, be it a secluded beach, a woodland walk or a building of some significance.

As more people than ever look to make the most of attractions closer to home, the National Trust is a go-to resource for anyone looking to see what's out there, be it for a day trip or on a longer staycation.
