About Red Funnel Ferries

Founded in 1861, Red Funnel Ferries*, originally The Southampton Isle of Wight and South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Company Limited, was the first ferry operator to the Isle of Wight.

If you're travelling by foot, you can reach East or West Cowes on the Isle of Wight in just 30 minutes thanks to its high-speed catamarans, while car ferries will have you there in 60 minutes.

On board, you'll have access to a café and gift shop; there's also the option to upgrade to the Signature Lounge* for a more peaceful crossing with space to relax or work in, table service, complimentary refreshments and free WiFi.

Red Funnel fleet

While the company has been in operation for over 160 years, the fleet has naturally evolved. Gone are the steamers, replaced with a total of five ferries that continuously cross the Solent today.

If you're travelling on foot*, you'll sail on one of the two high-speed RedJet catamarans that can carry around 270 passengers each. If you're taking a vehicle*, you'll drive onto one of the three specially designed Red Raptor class vessels, each named after birds of prey, that can accommodate over 200 cars and more than 800 passengers.

Yes, you can buy a ticket on the day at the ferry terminal but availability isn't guaranteed and it's often more expensive than pre-booking online*.

Can I make an open booking?

You can't currently buy open tickets, however, if you opt for the Flexi fare*, you can make amendments free of charge although you may have to pay the fare difference).

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome on board* Red Funnel Ferries and they travel for free.

Are there disabled facilities on board?

All Red Funnel Ferries vessels are accessible for disabled passengers. Vehicle ferries have lifts up from the main deck to the passenger lounge and you can request assistance before and during your journey. Find out more about accessibility on Red Funnel Ferries*.

What's the luggage allowance?

As a foot passenger*, you can take a maximum of two suitcases and one small piece of hand luggage per person.
