How to find cheap train tickets
Pre-booking online in advance at TrainPal is the best way to save money on travel. Here are some of the other ways TrainPal helps you to save:
Split tickets
With a split ticket*, you're taking the exact same journey but instead of having one ticket, you might have two or three. That's because sometimes when your journey is split into segments, it works out cheaper.
TrainPal let's you search for split tickets, which could save you as much as 95% compared to the standard fare from one destination to another.
Railcards
If you're a frequent traveller, purchasing a National Rail Railcard* could help you save money on train tickets. You could enjoy as much as a third off the standard price of fares and they often pay for themselves after a couple of trips.
You can purchase one of the following railcards directly through TrainPal:
- 16-17 Saver*
- 16-25 Railcard*
- 26-30 Railcard*
- Senior Railcard*
- Two Together Railcard*
- Family & Friends Railcard*
- Network Railcard*
Railcards cost £30 and are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.
Season tickets
Like railcards, season tickets could save you up to a third on train tickets. A season ticket is ideal for commuters as they apply to specific routes, whereas a Railcard gives you discounts on any route.
Travel off-peak
If you have the time and flexibility, travelling during off-peak hours could save you money. Generally speaking, the off-peak period is between 9.30am and 4.00pm from Monday to Friday and at any time on weekends, but this varies depending on where you're travelling.
