Denmark climate overview

This fragmented peninsula lying between the Baltic and North Sea forms one of the smallest countries in north west Europe. The rich Nordic culture is manifested in historical moated castles, beautiful cathedrals and churches.

Denmark is made up of the Jutland peninsula and over 400 islands, some linked to the mainland by bridge. The majority of the land is low and flat, or with low undulating hills at best. Windmills and traditional thatched cottages break up the flat monotony. Considerable areas of coastal fringe have been reclaimed and drained with elaborate drainage channels.

The landscape is dominated by a patchwork of fertile arable farms. Over 60% of the land is intensively cultivated with large-scale high-tech farms. The main crops are grain with extensive grazing pastures to support the country's well renowned dairy industry. Pockets of deciduous woodland and heather covered moors exist in areas unsuitable for cultivation.

Denmark's extensive coastline is varied: ranging from beautiful sandy beaches along the west coast of Jutland for example near Esbjerg, to rocky wild shoreline and the striking white cliffs of Møns Klint on the island of Møn.

Summers are characterised by a mixture of sunny spells and showers, some of which turn thundery. Temperatures are warm although a cooler North Sea breeze is often noticeable along the coast.

Winters become cold as daytime temperatures hover around freezing and feel raw in the often-strong winds. Fog and low cloud severely reduce winter sunshine. Showers continue through the winter, turning wintry at times, but snow-cover rarely lasts very long.
