Ecuador weather overview

As its name suggests, Ecuador lies on the Equator. It has a varied topography in which a narrow, low-lying coastal plain rises steeply to a mountainous interior. The forested lowlands to its east form part of the Amazon Basin. These elements give it a climate as varied as its terrain. On the coast, temperatures and humidity are high throughout the year and you should go prepared for downpours during the December to April rainy season.

Rain is heavier towards the north, falling off the further south you go along the coastline. Up in the Andes, temperatures drop the higher up you go and the tallest peaks are covered in snow for much of the year.

In the middle altitudes, conditions are pleasant and spring-like: days are warm but never too hot and nights, although cool, are never cold and frosty. However, go prepared for rain, which falls largely between September and May, arriving mainly in the afternoon and evening.

Prepare for even more rain if you plan to visit the equatorial lowlands of the Amazon Basin which are hot, muggy and wet all year.

What to pack for Ecuador weather

Pack light cotton clothing for visits to the coast and warmer to heavy wear for mountain trips. Rainwear is always useful.
