Haiti occupies the western third of Hispaniola, a large and mountainous Caribbean island which also holds the Dominican Republic. Rain falls throughout the year on Haiti but its north coast and mountainous interior are wetter than the south. Temperatures are always high but humidity on the coast is rather lower than elsewhere in the Caribbean. The air is fresher and cooler in the mountains.
