Iraq weather overview
Most of Iraq consists of flat lowland desert and river valleys, although there are mountains in the northeast (Kurdistan) and a short coastline on the Persian Gulf. The desert region records some of the world's highest temperatures in the summer. When the Shamal wind blows hot and dusty to make life even more trying, there is the danger of heat exhaustion or even heatstroke. Winters are mild in the south of Iraq but grow colder the further north you go and Kurdistan has heavy snows.
What to pack for Iraq weather
Take very light, loose clothing with head covers on a summer visit, medium to warm clothes for the winter months and even warmer clothing for the mountains.
