TUI reports high demand for summer 2022 holidays

Holiday giant TUI* has released its Q1 2022 report with revenue (€37 billion) up five times that of Q1 2021 (€468 million). What's more, it predicts a strong summer season as bookings continue to climb.

As of 30 January 2022, around 3.5 million people had booked trips with TUI for summer 2022*. That's roughly 72% of what was booked in the same period three years ago for summer 2019.

As "holiday bookings are picking up significantly", TUI is confident that this year's bookings will likely match, if not surpass, pre-pandemic levels, something it says in no small part due to the upcoming removal of testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers from 11 February.

TUI also reported that holidaymakers are spending more on their summer escapes* with the average selling price up by 22%.

This, it says, is down to a mixture of increased demand and people's desire to spend a little more on their much-needed holidays following years of uncertainty and restrictions. People are buying higher-rated packages and extras such as upgraded hotel rooms .

CEO of TUI Group, Fritz Joussen, said: "We expect a strong Summer 2022. There is pent-up demand among customers. We see this in all European source markets. The last two financial quarters have shown that the Group continues to stabilise.

"Every step towards normality gives people confidence, and the demand for holidays increases immediately. Despite the still ongoing trend towards very short-term bookings, we see the strong demand for the upcoming summer 2022."
