Portugal weather overview
Portugal's southerly position makes it Europe's answer to California in terms of climate, although its hot summers can be tempered by weather fronts moving in from the Atlantic. The best place for summer sun-seekers is the south coast where summers are long, dry and hot but tempered by sea breezes and the cool Atlantic Ocean: hence the popularity of the Algarve.
The mildest, driest winters are also to be found in the south, although anywhere in Portugal can be rainy in the winter months. The heaviest downpours take place in the north and can begin there in early autumn. The north of Portugal is higher in altitude than the south and can, therefore, witness snow in the winter, although this is sporadic and of short duration.
What to pack for Portugal weather
Pack light clothes for the summer months and supplement these with warmer attire for the autumn and winter. Take a raincoat in the winter months.
