Singapore climate overview
The city-state of Singapore has influence far exceeding its small size. Located just north of the equator off the tip of the Malay Peninsula, the republic comprises one major island and a number of smaller outlying ones. It has few natural resources and produces none of its own food. Historically it was a perfect transhipment point between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea and prospered with the development of tin mining and rubber estates in the Malay Peninsula.
While predominantly Chinese, the population includes significant numbers of Malays and Indians. A strong multiracial quality exists, reflecting Arab, Chinese, European, Indian, and indigenous Malay cultures.
Singapore is a clean, open city with tree-lined streets and lush green parks. Despite its small size and population of over 3 million only half of the land area has been developed. There is a central hilly region and a small area of hills in the west, but apart from this it is relatively flat. Large areas around the coast have been reclaimed, and much of the original jungle and swamp has been cleared. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, a small area of rain forest, remains on the central hills.
The climate of Singapore is tropical, with uniformly high temperatures and high humidity in every month. There is no dry season so monthly rainfall is also high throughout the year with heavy afternoon downpours being the norm. The wettest time is during the Northeast Monsoon from November to January with most rain falling in December, while February is usually the sunniest month. Heat and humidity are particularly high in the months from March to October, moderated only by onshore breezes.
