Sweden weather overview

When planning a trip to Sweden, consider carefully which parts of the country you plan to visit: weather conditions vary considerably from north to south. In the hilly north and northwest, winters are bitterly cold and you'll find snow on the peaks throughout the year. Summer weather is changeable: you'll see more sunshine and less rain if you stay in the sheltered valleys.

Northeast, on lower ground, the summers are even more balmy despite the region's proximity to the Arctic Circle. However, winter brings long periods of snow which can last more than four months. In central and southern Sweden, winters are shorter but just as chilling as those in the north; summers are long and fairly warm, with little rain.

Spring and autumn are the rainiest periods here and, in the winter, the rain turns to heavy snow, so go prepared.

What to pack for Sweden weather

Even in summer, you should supplement light clothing with warmer attire so you can layer up. Take rainwear in spring and autumn, and wrap up very warmly for a winter visit.
