Syria weather overview

The climate of Syria is a strange hybrid of influences from the Mediterranean and Arabian desert. The hottest part of the country is the desert land to the east which makes up more than half of Syria's surface. This is a region of extremes: baking hot summers, cold, frosty and even snowy winters and a rain pattern which, although sporadic, can bring dramatic localised flash floods.

To the north and west lie plains which areas hot as the desert region but have higher rainfall. Mountains lie between these plains and the Mediterranean and, on high ground, both rainfall and snow cover can be substantial. The coast is hot and muggy in the summer and mild and wet with spells of fine weather in the winter months.

The beginning and end of the summer can see the dramatic arrival of the hot and dusty Khamsin winds which can send temperatures soaring as high as 48°C (118°F).

What to pack for Syria weather

Take light clothes in the summer with scarves for protection against heat and dust. In winter, warm clothing is needed when travelling inland. Anticipate winter rain if you are staying on the coast.
