Things to do in Tenerife in February 2025

February brings one of Europe's, let alone Spain's and Tenerife's, most popular parties. The exact dates vary each year as the Carnaval de Santa Cruz is a pre-Lent excuse for a riotous succession of events, which include carnival queen contests, fancy-dress parades (with themes and therefore costumes changing on an annual basis), live music, and sound systems culminating in El Entierro de la Sardina.

The Burial of the Sardine sees a giant papier-mache fish make a deathly procession to the ocean accompanied by hordes of hysterical, weeping widows (actually men in pantomime-style drag get-up). Arriving at the Atlantic, the sardine is set alight to mark the end of carnival. Other carnivals to look out for include Puerto de la Cruz's with the highlight being the Mascarita Ponte Tacon, a marathon of transvestites negotiating the port's streets in high heels. The carnivals in the south of the island, including the one in Los Cristianos, tend to be held afterwards.

At the start of the month, throughout Tenerife, natives commemorate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Candelaria coinciding with the global Candlemas celebration. In the heart of Candelaria, street lights are extinguished and the nocturnal passage of worshippers is made by candlelight.
