Travel insurance FAQs
Many UK travellers have questions about travel insurance, especially during the current coronavirus outbreak and where the government advises against all but essential travel.
We've endeavoured to tackle the more pressing issues and answered some of these questions regarding travel insurance below.
FCDO travel advice
Travelling in 2025/2026
Current travel advice differs around the UK, however, below you will find a few general FAQs regarding travel insurance:
Can I claim if my flight hasn't been cancelled?
If you have "cancellation and travel disruption" insurance you are covered during the current FCO advice 'not to travel' period irrespective of whether your flight has or has not been cancelled.
What if I travel against government advice?
Travelling against government advice may also invalidate your insurance. Check with your insurance provider before doing this.
If you do not have travel insurance:
Can I take out travel insurance now for future coronavirus disruption?
No, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has said that travel insurance is for unforeseen circumstances and the coronavirus is no longer an unforeseen circumstance. Some companies have also said that for existing policyholders all future bookings may not be covered for disruption caused by the coronavirus.
How do I get my money back if my flight has been cancelled?
Your airline should be in contact with you about either giving you a refund or changing the date of your booking.
Can I get a refund if my flight hasn't been cancelled but I don't want to travel?
No, your travel provider is only required to offer you a refund if they cancel your flight.
Can I claim on my credit/debit card if my flight hasn't been cancelled but I don't want to travel?
No, claiming on your credit or debit card is only available if your travel or accommodation provider ceases trading.
My flight hasn't been cancelled but I don't want to go. Can I get a refund?
No, if the flight you are booked on has not been cancelled and the government travel ban has been lifted, you are not entitled to a refund. Nor will your insurance cover you. No insurance can cover you for changing your mind.
However, if you are forced into quarantine when you arrive at your destination and you have "cancellation and travel disruption" cover you may be able to not travel and make a claim.
I have an existing medical condition and I have travel insurance but my flight hasn't been cancelled. Can I claim on my insurance?
If your doctor advises you should not travel, get a letter from the doctor and you should be able to claim on your policy.
