April is one of the most beautiful months in the UK. Spring is in full swing by then; bluebells carpet woodland floors and days become noticeably longer and brighter. As such, it's a wonderful time to explore these Great British Isles. We've pulled together our pick of some of the very best places to go for all interests.

1. Padstow, Cornwall, England

Pretty Padstow on the north Cornish coast needs very little introduction. Although long associated with its resident celebrity chef, Rick Stein, Padstow pulls people in for far more than the fine seafood on offer.

Outdoor activities and historic attractions are in plentiful supply and, as it's situated on the bank of the River Camel estuary, it's also perfect for discovering more of the coast, such as the seven nearby beaches and cities such as Newquay and medieval Tintagel Castle.

What's more, in April, Padstow is quieter than during the summer months, and days are gradually getting longer and sunnier. Just remember to pack waterproof for those untimely spring showers.

With fishing at its core, Padstow's harbour is its heart. Grab an ice cream and watch the boats go by before strapping yourself into a high-speed RIB for a thrilling ride with Padstow Sealife Safaris.

Let these wildlife-conscious experts whisk you out to sea for a glimpse of the coastline and any number of species from birds such as puffins in springtime to marine life including seals, dolphins and possibly even whales if you're very lucky.

Walkers are treated to the many opportunities along the South West Coast Path. Take in the dramatic Trevose Head and the wonderful natural formation of the collapsed sea cave at Trevone Bay round hole - just, please, don't climb down inside! You can also take to two wheels on the dedicated 18 mile-long Camel Cycle Trail, along an old railway line.

2. Scilly Isles, England

In many ways, the archipelago of the Scilly Isles, just off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, feels like another country altogether. With more than 145 islands, only five of which are inhabited, a holiday here is all about active exploration.

Although the weather can be changeable in April, located as the isles are in eastern fringes of the Atlantic, if you pack the right gear, including waterproofs, you'll be well prepared and likely to enjoy some bright, sunny days.

A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), you can walk on white sandy beaches hemmed by crystal clear waters, hike on rugged coastal routes, take to the water sailing or kayaking, go bird watching or seal-colony spotting, among many other attractions.

The main island of St Mary's is where many travellers base themselves. Its centre, Hugh Town, has the best selection of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants as well as passenger ferries departing from its Quay. Take a cruise to some of the uninhabited islands such as Samson. Inhabited until 1855, it still has abandoned boat sheds and the ruins of several farms.

Many ships have been wrecked off the Scilly Isles over the centuries. Today, the Western Rocks are a memorial to the numerous sailors lost on Bishop Rock, home to the UK's most southwesterly (and arguably iconic) lighthouse atop a 50-metre-high column of rock that is perilously concealed under high spring tides.

3. Salcombe, Devon, England

Salcombe sits within another AONB and it's not hard to see why: its low-lying location on the edge of the gently rolling countryside along the bank of the Kingsbridge Estuary in South Devon, gives way to soft sand beaches, invitingly clear water and pretty bobbing boats in its busy but sheltered bay.

While April may still see the odd spring shower, days are becoming increasingly brighter and sunshine is more readily available than in preceding months of the year. If you pack accordingly, nothing is off-limits in Salcombe at this time.

While the town itself has plenty of places to enjoy fresh seafood as well as galleries, shops and pubs, not to mention Salcombe Maritime Museum for a dose of local history, the harbour is where you can hop aboard a boat for a pleasant estuary cruise. There are numerous other ways to get on the water in Salcombe, from sailing schools and boat hire to sea kayaking and paddleboarding.

Back on dry land, the South West Coast Path gives you lots of energetic options including a clifftop ramble to the historic Start Point Lighthouse. You'll also find many more walking routes and beaches spread across the four neighbouring estuaries of the South Devon AONB.

4. Pembroke, Pembrokeshire Coast, Wales

For a holiday steeped in history, Pembroke in southwest Wales is hard to beat. Plus, by April, days are longer and brighter with a touch more sunshine than previous months. Do, however, go armed with trusty layers and waterproofs just in case.

The imposing sight of Pembroke Castle, which dates from Norman times, is impossible to miss. It was here in 1457 that future King Henry VII of England was born. It's a magnificent medieval site, perched high on a peninsula and surrounded by water. You can also walk around Pembroke's 900-year-old town walls to get a sense of its historic centre while stopping off for refreshments along the way.

Outwith the town, you'll find you're close to what's said to be one of the UK's finest beaches, Barafundle Bay, while Freshwater West Beach is the place for surfers and a timely stroll to West Angle Bay could see you trapped in the Point House Pub for an extra round or two when the road becomes cut off by the high tide, albeit briefly.

The mighty Pembrokeshire Coast Path also sweeps by Pembroke, giving you lots of options for walking. A good way is to trek to a specific point and catch the Coastal Cruiser walkers bus back to town.

Meanwhile, the National Trust site of Stackpole* has so much going on throughout the year, such as guided wildlife walks - otter spotting, anyone? - and stargazing, as well as providing the perfect launching pad at Stackpole Quay for canoers and kayakers.

5. Weymouth, Dorset Coast, England

The laid back seaside resort of Weymouth, with its fine Georgian architecture and busy little harbour, is an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding coast and countryside. Located within the UNESCO-stamped Jurassic Coast, there is so much see and do.

By April, the weather in Weymouth is getting slowly drier and brighter although waterproofs are essential for any unexpected showers.

The huge swathe of Chesil Beach is a natural draw for anyone visiting Weymouth as is Sandfoot Castle, a ruined fort dating from the time of Henry VIII. Walking, watersports, sailing, heritage trails and sites from more modern history, such as The Tank Museum at Bovington a short drive away will also keep everyone entertained.

To the east of Weymouth is the Isle of Purbeck, a peninsula that's worth more than a day trip. As well as waterside Wareham, the puffing Swanage Steam Railway, the long sweeping beach of Studland and the abandoned village of Tyneham (check opening times), and the chalky Harry Stacks rocks, you'll find the ruins of Corfe Castle, dating in parts from the 11th century.

You can also take the novel Chain Ferry across the tiny strait between Studland and Sandbanks before cruising out to Brownsea Island, known for its rare red squirrel population, readily spied among the woodland.

6. Isle of Wight, England

The Isle of Wight has tempted visitors for centuries - a favourite holiday spot of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, no less. Located no more than six miles off England's south coast, you can choose to arrive by ferry at the largest town of Ryde or the ports of Yarmouth and Fishbourne.

Much like the Scilly Isles, the Isle of Wight can feel like a country in miniature. It has a distinct character not to mention its own way and pace of life, all of which benefit from increasingly dry and bright days by April.

There's much to see and do, with lots of focus on the award-winning beaches, watersports, walking, horse riding, golfing and cycling that can be enjoyed. It's heaven for those who love to get out and about while remaining close to comforts such as accommodation, pubs and fine restaurants.

Stretch your legs and lenses with a birdwatching trip to RSPB Brading Marshes Nature Reserve, where, in spring, breeding lapwing, can be seen. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway also bursts back into life in April with short nostalgic rides for all ages to enjoy.

In addition, as the Isle of Wight is a recognised UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the fun doesn't stop after dark: book a guide for some expert stargazing or take your own telescope to spot shooting stars, constellations and planets galore.

7. New Forest, Hampshire, England

If you're after a rural break with all the activities to ensure you make the most of it, look no further than the New Forest National Park. This beautiful blend of heathland, woodland, beaches and wetlands makes for one seriously diverse destination.

The park is a highly-protected and ever-evolving landscape where countless birds, reptiles, deer and red squirrels all live. Of course, the free-roaming New Forest pony is the superstar.

Interestingly, the New Forest sees, albeit marginally, the highest average temperatures in April of any of our destinations. Just remember those all-important waterproofs and extra layers when exploring.

Brockenhurst is the largest town situated deep within the New Forest, although there are many more to choose from, including coastal Milford-on-Sea and the port of Lymington.

As for things to do, fill your lungs with fresh air on one of the many themed walks - such as dog-friendly, pub-focused or wildlife watching - cycle routes for all abilities or out on the water kayaking, sailing or paddleboarding.

While the youngest kiddos will delight at Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World*, older ones will want to bounce around the inflatable floating course at the New Forest Water Park.

Meanwhile, history lovers should visit Buckler's Hard; where once warships for Nelson's Navy were built, today there's a maritime museum, among other sights. Then there's the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst, the 16th-century artillery fortress, and later prison of Charles I, of Hurst Castle and the Bombay Sapphire Distillery.

8. Isle of Mull, Western Scotland

The magical Isle of Mull, the second-largest island in the Inner Hebrides, sits just off Scotland's west coast. In April, Mull's enjoying longer days with a lingering chance of showers, so rainwear and layers are essential.

But nothing will dampen the spirits of those who come for the island's main attraction, its wildlife, and April is an excellent time to spot some of its resident and migratory inhabitants.

It's no coincidence that Mull is also known as Eagle Island. Here, white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles take top billing, and Mull Eagle Watch, a ranger-guided experience to sea eagles safely, opens for the season in April.

Mull also hosts otters, seals, harbour porpoise, bottlenose dolphins, red deer and countless bird species year-round as well as many other visitors. If you're keen to see a specific bird or mammal, do your research to find out when and where to be and go.

Elsewhere, colourful Tobermory, the island's main town, has many indy cafés, eateries and shops as well as places to book excursions and boat trips. Nearby Tobermory Distillery is the place for an educated dram tasting session while history comes alive on a visit to the dungeons, battlements and banqueting hall of medieval Duart Castle.

Hillwalkers will no doubt head straight to the island's Munro, Ben More, while more tame walking and cycling routes can be found going around the island, backing beaches such as Calgary Bay and taking in its splendid landscapes.

9. Ballycastle, Causeway Coast, Northern Ireland

Escape to Northern Ireland's Causeway Coast and you'll be treated to far more than just the wonder that is the geological phenomenon of the Giant's Causeway.

This 30-mile route snakes along the northern Atlantic coast of Northern Ireland, with Castlerock the starting point in the east and the pretty, white-washed seaside town of Ballycastle the gateway in the west.

Whether you fly or bring your car by ferry to Belfast, Ballycastle is only an hour or so up the road from the capital. By April, Ballycastle benefits from an increase in daylight, more so than some places further south; just remember to pack all the right gear for every springtime eventually.

While Ballycastle sits in the Glens AONB - deservedly so for its incredible natural beauty including valleys, glens, rock formations and forests - in the town, you'll find a Blue Flag-winning marina and Ballycastle Strand (or, beach), a strip of stunning golden sand where surfing and other watersports can be found.

From the harbour, you can catch a boat out to RSPB Rathlin Island, just off the coast where, among others, razorbills and puffins delight visitors in spring.

As well as the Giant's Causeway, other nearby attractions include the scenic ruins of 16th-century Kinbane Castle, the 20-metre long rope bridge over the sea to the isle of Carrick-a-Rede and Dunseverick Falls, to name very few.

10. St Andrews, Fife, Scotland

Historic St Andrews on the east coast of Scotland is a fabulous place to stay. By April, days are as long and bright although you will still need layers and waterproofs just in case.

The Home of Golf and Scotland's oldest university, St Andrews has plenty to attract visitors. Whether you'd like to take a swing on the Old Course (advanced booking essential) or not, you can't help but be impressed by its golfing legacy, which is uncovered at the British Golf Museum.

Medieval roots can be found at cliffside St Andrews Castle and among the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, while the St Andrews Botanic Garden is alive with seasonal blooms in April. One of the greatest draws to St Andrews, however, is the stunning two-mile stretch of golden beach at West Sands and a brisk walk in the bracing sea air is a must.

Outside the town, Tentsmuir Nature Reserve is another excellent walking spot to spy birds and get a feel for the coastal landscape. Meanwhile, to the south, you can hop from one pretty East Neuk fishing village, such as Crail, to the next.

Head to Anstruther for what's been voted the best chippy in the UK and to take the boat to the Isle of May to see puffins, razorbills, seals and if you're very lucky, maybe even dolphins.

Foodies will want to call by the St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company and the Balgove Larder Farm Shop, while a tour of Eden Mill gin distillery never disappoints.
